Discussion What’s the purpose of translation?
Who’s the audience [what type of audience is intended]? Is our rendering communicative or analytical of the ST? What is the sacred angle of the textual triangle? TT receiver, ST author, or text? In the light of above and other questions we determine the nature of our rendering of ST, bearing in mind textual characteristics, in particular, acceptability, informativity, and naturalness. Arabic culture-specific stock phrases should be conveyed with standard English phrases used in similar contexts. The translator, therefore, applies the culture filter when dealing with social discourse. The TT receiver needs to be addressed in the mode they understand. Implications of intercultural communication should be maintained when dealing with social types of texts.
