BSAP/Special Programs 2nd Marking Period Newsletter Hall, Coleman, & Davis *In Bookworms with Mrs. Rulon’s class we read books about Native Americans and another chapter book titled, If You Lived With the Cherokee and discussed what life was like to live as a Cherokee and which aspects we liked and didn’t like. We also tried creating names for ourselves using Cherokee symbols. We continue to use vowel patterns to spell words and construct sentences. *Some of the News 2 You articles have been about a giant dinosaur, Titanosaur, the Super Bowl, and Famous Musicians. After we read an article about different hobbies, we learned how to fold a paper airplane and flew them in the hallway. We used the tiles on the floor to count how far each airplane went and to see whose airplane went the furthest! *Some of the Social Studies and Science topics have been about energy from the sun and economics, more specifically, wants versus needs. We learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and made timelines based on his life. We also created our hopes and dreams list for Claymont and made individual posters. We also made predictions as to whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow! *We had a blast at the Bowling Invitational and are looking forward to the Spring Invitational. Special Programs is participating in the Special Olympics Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. Shirts are being sold and we are hoping to have school-wide involvement. BSAP/Special Programs 2nd Marking Period Newsletter Carlin/Kaufmann  The second marking period flew by! We had fun learning about various science and social studies topics. Some we focused on were gravity, energy from the sun, family and Martin Luther King Jr. We participated with the whole school in writing our own essays about how to spread kindness through Claymont. In reading, we have been reading about Dinosaurs, The Super Bowl, The Mistletoe Plant, The Earth’s Rotation and Revolution, as well as many others. We have been working in a cross-curricular manner throughout this past marking period. Additionally, we had a blast at the BSD bowling invitational with our buddies. We are very excited for the Spring Invitational at Springer. Willis, Gallaway, & Palmer We enjoyed all kinds of topics this marking period. Some of our favorites included “Famous Musicians” from News-2-You, reading “Jack Can” and playing a “smell” guessing game from Unique Learning Systems, and discovering the power of the sun in science. We continue to focus on requesting, increasing independence, social skills, and engaging in hands-on activities related to our stories. We look forward to learning more about the sun in Unique Learning Systems, seasons, and plants and their needs in science, upcoming letter sounds: /i/ and /p/, and expanding our language to include opposites.

BSAP/Special Programs 2nd Marking Period Newsletter Fisher, Smith, & Simmons In Mrs. Fisher’s class we are continuing to enjoy reading! We are enjoy reading about current events and topics in our News 2 You curriculum. In December we read about Operation Santa Paws which was founded by Justin Rudd in Sacramento, CA. Because of this News 2 You text, we decided to collect toys and other supplies to Delaware Puppy Rescue. It was a great success and we are going to make it a Claymont tradition. We continue to enjoy reading with our third grade partners in Ms. Gould’s class. It is awesome to see the student’s interacting with their peers and providing insightful answers in class. Our favorite book so far is Because of Winn Dixie. Our math adventures are taking us to the Land of Tri as we develop skills in adding and subtracting multi digit numbers. We continue our work with money and are solving word problems that resemble the steps required to make purchases. We are also delving into fractions. We have welcomed a student teacher, Alexandra Simmons, from Wilmington University. Miss Alex will soon be ready to teach some lessons on her own.
